  • What can I recycle? Learn more about what you can recycle on the City’s recycling page.

  • How do I remove larger items? Every month, Baltimoreans can request up to three bulk trash items for collection. One day per month is set aside for this collection. Call 311 or use the 311 app to request a pick up. Midtown Baltimore will also pick up bulk trash when requested. To contact Midtown, visit their website and submit a request.

Development & Permits

Architectural Review

In Mount Vernon, all exterior construction and alterations for new and/or existing buildings must be approved through the MVBA Architectural Review Committee (ARC) and the Commission for Historical and Architectural Preservation (CHAP). Contact the ARC to learn more about the process for getting work approved.

Zoning & Development

MVBA has two committees that overlap responsibilities in this area. Whether a project requires variances or assistance with Zoning and/or Development, it is best to contact both the Zoning Committee and the Development Committee before any work has started in the neighborhood.

Building Permits

Most of the time, a permit is required for any construction work that is done at a property within the city. The Benton Building downtown houses Baltimore City’s Permitting Department. If a permit is required for exterior work, MVBA’s Architectural Review Committee and CHAP will have to grant approval before any work can begin and permits can be distributed.
